Less than a week ago history was made. An African-American man was elected to the office of President of the United States. Although this was an incredible day in history, it also saddened me a bit that it took so long to happen.
What saddened me even more was the passing of California’s Proposition 8 and other propositions like it.
Courtesy of Wikipedia: Proposition 8 is a California State ballot proposition that would amend the state Constitution to restrict the definition of marriage to a union between a man and a woman. It would overturn a recent California Supreme Court decision that had recognized same-sex marriage in California as a fundamental right.
The official ballot title language for Proposition 8 is “Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry.” The entirety of the text to be added to the constitution is: “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”
Of course this is not the first proposition of this nature, but happening at the same time we elected Barack Obama president, voters within our country also decided to deny civil rights to gays and lesbians.
I plan on using this blog to highlight the problems that are facing gays and lesbians in the US, especially the rights that are denied to us, purely because of our sexual orientation.
